A Special Kind of Specialty Pharmacy
Apothecary By Design is a specialty pharmacy headquartered in Portland, Maine, with a regional pharmacy in the Chicago area, and licensed throughout nearly the entire United States. We’re focused on the treatment of complex, chronic diseases, such as infertility, hepatitis C, and rheumatoid arthritis.
ABD was founded as a community pharmacy in 2008 by five partners, three of whom are still active in the business. With only a few employees back then, struggling in a difficult economy, everyone pitched in; partners doubled as shipping clerks, and every team member answered the pharmacy’s telephone.
A different vision
From the start, we saw ABD as a different type of pharmacy—one that worked as an integral part of the patient’s care team, and that actively advocated to achieve the best possible outcomes. So we did things a bit differently, cultivating our staff to form deep connections with patients and providers, to go the extra mile for the people we serve, and to set uncompromising quality standards.
Over time, ABD has successfully realized this vision, as demonstrated by the growth of the business and its recognition in the field of pharmacy. Along the way, ABD has been fortunate to be assisted by community partners such as the City of Portland, Bangor Savings Bank, and the Finance Authority of Maine.
Some things change, some don’t
Today, ABD focuses exclusively on specialty pharmacy, is a portfolio company of BelHealth Investment Partners, and has grown to include a regional base (formerly Healy Pharmacy). For three years in a row, ABD has been named one of Maine’s “Best Places to Work” and has been ranked on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies.
We’ve also been honored as the 2014 Business of the Year by the Portland Development Corporation, a recipient of the 2015 Maine Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, and the winner of the 2015 FAME Business at Work for Maine Award.
Our commitment to excellence has been acknowledged in other ways. ABD is one of the few specialty pharmacies to hold three national accreditations: from Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board, and URAC.
To share—and expand—our expertise, ABD has also forged close academic affiliations, including a residency program with the University of New England College of Pharmacy.
Now with more than 100 team members, ABD has grown in size and capabilities. We utilize state-of-the-art technology and serve patients throughout the country. But we retain the personal, high-touch clinical approach for which our team has always been known.
And as we did from the beginning, a team member—a “real person”—always answers the phone.
